The First Genre: Facebook post
Rationale:
My Facebook post is meant to be appealing to the “boomers” or the people that are not good with the internet. They could be my parents, your parents, or even teachers, etc. I got this idea from my dad since he falls victim to these malicious Facebook ads. They believe anything they see on Facebook with this format, so I am using the same format to warn them about AI and educate them. If artificial intelligence progresses to the point where humans are not required for jobs, these people will be the most affected by it. The moms/dads and people that have families put food on the table. If no awareness is being spread, by 2030, 45 million Americans could lose their job to AI and 375 million people over the next ten years worldwide (Kolmer,2021). This is extremely critical to the lower-income families (middle class) which most people are. The government won’t care because many of them are just greedy for power and money. They will make tons of revenue when CEOs abuse AI and that includes Elon Musk. People instantly think if it’s a credible face or a well-known face, whatever they say must be instantly true. However, this is far from reality as many manipulate their words into believing what they what you to think. Although in this specific example, Elon Musk did say “AI will make jobs kind of pointless”, we all know the richest person in the world will benefit heavily from the development of AI. In fact, he is creating his own AI called Tesla Bot that should have the features of a human which I am sure many older people do not know about. The point is if I just used a random picture of a robot or a lesser-known face, many people would not click on it because they feel like famous people gives them a sense of validity in their opinions. In my Facebook post, I also talked about the power gap between countries and in parenthesis ‘war’. Without the emphasis on the word, ‘war’ many people would skip it and not consider it as a huge problem when in fact it is. If artificial intelligence progresses too far it will eventually lead to one country outperforming other countries. When that happens tension will arise between countries and eventually lead to conflicts which may result in war. It is important for the audience to know that because many of them are ignorant about this type of development considering the media or government won’t educate them. I want to inform them about the potential risk such an advancement in technology can have on their future so they can be ready. Raising awareness may not be able to stop it but it will slow down the process and help create countermeasures. Lastly to finish off the post I included that it may potentially make the economy collapse. Many people are aware of the Great Depression and the stock market crash. If it does crash once again, all their savings will go out the window and I am sure no one wants that. If none of the issues concerning them, this should bring my audience back to reality and make them think about the issues on hand, as my stance is quite ironic because I showed a picture of Elon Musk, the richest man in the world as he would care if we lost our jobs and also to persuade my readers/viewers about AI. It is also good to note that I included a “click to learn more” sign in bright pink. This is because, from my many people’s experience, many of the posts that show has things like this to further envelop the viewers. In this case, I would use it to send it to my second genre: my blog.
The Second Genre: Blog
Rationale:
The rhetorical situation is college students being ignorant that AI can affect their majors and future job so they are a need to develop awareness and form their opinions about the field of AI and how it will impact them. While on the morning train as I commute to campus, I notice most of the people on board are on their phones. This made me think, what if I try to make them my target audience. Instead of wasting their time on their phones, maybe they could learn something about current events. The target audience is college students to new employees that just got hired for their first jobs. Creating the blog was quite tricky as I did something of this sort and I lacked creativity, so I just decided to go for a simple but informative way. The purpose of this genre was to inform and give more of an insight into the different problems of AI in the shortest and concise way possible without wasting their time. At most, it’s like a 7-minute read. The irony is that my audience is working so hard to get their degrees but if only they learned that in a couple of years to a decade, their hard work will be potentially a waste. This is the significance, I wanted to provide younger people that AI could affect their field. Even if it doesn’t affect their field, things like the tension between countries and economic impacts will whether directly or indirectly. Therefore, I am strongly advocating why more people should actively do research and stay up to date with the latest news. Although I am advocating against AI, I am also leaving my audience to make their own decision as I mentioned in the composition that there are benefits such as resources conservation and potential climate change fix. For some, it may be worth the risk while for others it may not. Even if they disagree, at least they are actively involved and engaged in their mind before deciding. Some people straight up don’t care, and it shows because even though this is a huge problem, I don’t see this getting talked about in any sort of media. From my experience, college students want validation from others. Whether it be in Instagram posts (likes, stories) or opinions, they won’t speak unless their friends also have the same opinions which are so bizarre. Why would you care if they disagree with you, that’s why it’s an opinion? This is another reason why I decided to go against AI in this case because I hope people at least are willing to share their opinions even if they disagree with my take. It’s important to be vocal about what you believe in, or people can shut you down very easily. Therefore, I would say my stance is informative, persuasive, and decisive. This is because I never backed down from my original argument that AI is overall detrimental to the world while informing them on some of the effects and hopefully convincing them. I originally considered a petition instead of this genre, but I don’t believe in petitions. This is because what is a petition going to do when someone is already dead set on doing something. You won’t be able to change their mind. AI is something that will happen regardless of if you want to or not. Giving someone information and letting them use it instead of a change in the petition is way better of a payoff.
Reflection:
When starting this project, I had major difficulties trying to find a suitable genre that fit what I needed. I had to scrap tons of ideas because in the end some of them didn’t really fit in with what I was trying to convey to my audience but eventually I settled down with a Facebook post and a blog. I encountered many barriers when communicating to my audience about the genres. The first barrier was trying to find something appealing to my audience. I had to get into the mindset of if it didn’t seem interesting then it should be scrapped. I think I did a good job targeting older people with my first genre and college students with my second genre. The second barrier was not writing too much. As I am not creative, I tend to just write to make it up for my lack of weakness and I felt like that’s something that helped me down during this project. For both genres, I overcame these by trial and error. I took breaks and whenever I felt satisfied, I just stuck with it without doubting myself. I also browsed through the internet looking for inspirations and that really helped. Looking at other works besides yours can really make you open the third eye and see what you are missing in your own work. The composing was different from my research essay because for my essay I had to find sources and do the research which was tedious but eventually turned out great. However, for the composition of this project, I had all the information together and just needed to minimize the important facts into ways that appeal to other people. This was rather easy as I answered my research question on my conclusion, so I just needed to break it down and that’s how I composed the main ideas for my genres as both are similar yet fundamentally different since they use different mediums to express their ideas. I chose the Facebook post because I noticed every time my dad wanted to show me something, a lot of the time the information he showed me was edited and false. They used formats extremely like the ones I used. I thought I could target people his age by using this same method. I am hypothesizing that they are just as gullible and should read into the post. I made it a picture of Elon Musk since they may believe it’s credible information coming from him, although I just shared one quote of his that is saying something about AI (not the information on bullet points on the bottom). It was a little manipulation by me but it’s actual information they could use, and they could also be aware of the problems in the future so, in the end, it turned pretty good. I chose the blog primarily because I lacked creativity. I also needed a different age group for my audience since I wanted to show AI not only can affect mature adults but also college students. I felt I summarized my entire source-based essay in 350 words pretty well which should take no more than 5 minutes to digest. This could also be used for the people that were interested in my Facebook post and wanted to learn more, I could send it a link to my blog which synergizes well. I ended up using genre, medium, stance, and especially rhetorical situations when composing this project. I feel as though they were very effective as I was able to explain them properly. Such as for my poster, I noticed older people tend to fall for more clickbait titles, so I used that to inform my audience. As for the blog my audience was ignorant college students that do not know AI could affect the major, they are studying for, so I used it to advocate the many problems they may face and should prepare. I feel as though my rhetorical technique overall has improved and I am able to explain what I am trying to say through my writing when at the beginning of the semester I struggled to do so.
